Villa & Parco

A story of place, expressed through taste

Lifestyle, Tuscan Authenticity & Exclusive Experiences

Villa Ermellina traces its origins to the 16th century, when the estate belonged to the noble Capacci family and later passed to the Bargagli — one of Siena’s most storied houses, owners of the Poggiarello estate since the mid-1500s.

For centuries, the Villa was never just a residence: it was a stage for gatherings, conversation and refined living, part of a wider world that reached from Siena’s salons to the courts of Europe. Its rooms, gardens and terraces were shaped not only for living, but for welcoming — for sharing time, for creating relationships.

Today, this legacy continues — not preserved as memory alone, but reinterpreted as experience.

“At the heart of the Villa, over one hundred varieties of roses unfold — a living tribute to the Bargagli family crest, where the rose has long been a symbol of identity and refinement.”

A Landscape Designed for living

The park is not simply a setting — it is part of the Villa’s story. Rebuilt after a violent storm tore through its roof and gardens in 1783, and called into service again after the earthquake of 1798 left much of Siena in ruins, the grounds have always known how to adapt: opening to shelter displaced families, travelling prelates and entire communities seeking refuge, then returning, just as easily, to wedding feasts and quiet afternoons of conversation.

The landscape became more than a backdrop. It became part of the experience of living.

The Spirit
of Ermellina

Ermellina Douglas Scotti was not defined by place, but by presence. Married to Marchese Celso Bargagli on the 4th of November 1868, she began a diary that very day — written in French, filled with balls at the Rozzi and the Casino degli Uniti, long carriage rides along the Lizza in her new Victoria, and friendships struck with the American writers Mary Crawford and Lily Conrad, who had taken rooms at the nearby Villa Poggiarello.

She moved through Siena with curiosity and elegance, always at the centre of a world shaped by relationships — a way of living where hospitality was never formal, but natural.

Villa Ermellina does not recreate her life. It continues her spirit.
A spirit of openness, of connection, of sharing space and time with others.
